01The first hour

Safety first, then the tree.

  1. 01

    Stay clear of wires.

Treat every wire as live, including anything a wire is touching. If a line is down or anyone is hurt, call 911, then Eversource at 800-286-2000.

  2. 02

Get everyone out from under it.

If a tree is on the house, keep people out of the rooms beneath it. Trees and limbs can shift after they land.

  3. 03

    Take photos before anything moves.

Photograph the tree, the damage and the area around it from a safe distance. Your insurance company will want them.

  4. 04

    Call your insurance company.

If a tree hits your house or another insured structure, standard homeowners policies generally cover the damage and part of the removal — check your policy.

  5. 05

    Call JLO — 24/7.

Don't cut a tree that's resting on a house or under tension yourself. Call or text a photo and we'll tell you what happens next.

02Before the next storm

Look up while it's calm.

Most trees that come down in a storm showed a warning sign first.

  • Dead or hanging branches over the roof, driveway or bedrooms
  • Trees leaning toward the house, or soil lifting at the base
  • Cracks in trunks or big limbs, and mushrooms at the base
  • Limbs growing into wires — leave those to the professionals
